Black Creek to Upgrade the Video Visitation System at the New Edmonton Remand Centre in Alberta, Canada

Black Creek Integrated Systems Corp. has been selected to upgrade the enterprise-class video visitation system serving the Edmonton Remand Centre and Centre 170 in Alberta, Canada. Originally provided and installed by Black Creek in 2013, the system is now being modernized to support the Windows® 10 operating system and to align with current technology standards.

As the largest jail and public building in Canada, the Edmonton Remand Centre currently houses 1,952 inmates, with expansion plans to accommodate an additional 864 beds. Situated on a 40-acre site, this maximum-security facility replaced the previous 31-year-old Remand Centre located in downtown Edmonton.

The Centre’s infrastructure features an offsite video visitation center (Centre 170) to facilitate secure family visits—helping prevent contraband entry and enhancing community support services. The facility also incorporates more than 50 video arraignment courtrooms, streamlining operations by removing the need to transport inmates externally.

The comprehensive visitation solution consists of 111 ruggedized inmate visitation stations, 58 visitor stations, 2 family/handicapped-accessible stations, 3 ruggedized mobile units, and 5 administration stations. The system is engineered to accommodate 60 simultaneous visits between the Remand Centre and Centre 170, with scalability to support greater capacity as the facility expands.

Black Creek’s upgraded solution will provide secure, end-to-end management of visit scheduling, monitoring, recording, and control for both onsite and remote video visitation. The system includes robust reporting capabilities and integrated messaging tools. Deployment of the new video visitation system is scheduled for this spring.
