Black Creek Integrated Systems Corp. has been selected to deliver the electronic security control system for the new underground Courthouse Commons Pedestrian Tunnel, connecting the New San Diego Central Courthouse at 1100 Union Street with the County Central Jail at 1173 Front Street. Spanning approximately 360 feet beneath public rights-of-way and a forthcoming high-rise mixed-use development on the former courthouse site, this tunnel will enable secure, efficient foot escorts by Sheriff’s deputies, replacing the current practice of transporting inmates by bus over the same two-block distance. The connecting pedestrian tunnel concept is similar to "skywalks" commonly seen spanning roadways between related buildings, but the restricted and fortified underground placement makes it ideal for transporting detainees in custody.
The tunnel’s security infrastructure will expand upon Black Creek’s existing Super Display® Touchscreen System currently deployed at the Central Jail. Leveraging this advanced touchscreen technology, deputies will be empowered to remotely operate doors, manage elevator access, control live and recorded video surveillance, and respond to intercom and duress alarms—all from the protected environment of an established control room. Since 2012, Black Creek has partnered with San Diego County to implement touchscreen-based solutions in the San Diego Central Jail, Facility 8 Detention Facility, East Mesa Reentry Facility, Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, and East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. In addition, Black Creek is providing the security system for the Rock Mountain Detention Facility, currently undergoing renovation.
This contract enables the San Diego Sheriff’s Office to leverage the latest advancements in correctional security technology, strengthening safety and accountability for personnel, inmates, and the public. Key benefits include reduced installation and maintenance costs, enhanced service responsiveness, and upgraded systems that deliver essential documentary evidence to support criminal prosecutions and defend against liability claims.
