Birmingham, AL – April 6, 2021 – Black Creek Integrated Systems Corp. has been awarded the contract to provide the electronic security control system in the new underground Courthouse Commons Pedestrian Tunnel connecting the New San Diego Central Courthouse located at 1100 Union Street to the County Central Jail Building located at 1173 Front Street. This new underground tunnel (approximately 360 feet, or two blocks, long) will traverse the public rights-of-way (ROW) and cross beneath a new high-rise mixed-use development to be built on the site of the old courthouse. The tunnel will allow Sheriff’s deputies to escort prisoners on foot from the Central Jail to the Courthouse, which will be more efficient than the current transport system: for nearly 2 years, Deputies have had to load prisoners into buses and drive them the two blocks to the Courthouse basement.

The control system for the Pedestrian Tunnel will be an extension of Black Creek’s Super Display® Touchscreen System already installed in the Central Jail. Black Creek’s touchscreen technology will allow Deputies to remotely open/close doors, control elevator movement, manage camera views and recorded video, and answer intercom call-ins and duress alarms, all from the security of an existing control room. Black Creek has been working with San Diego County since 2012, with touchscreen systems installed in the San Diego Central Jail, Facility 8 Detention Facility, East Mesa Reentry Facility, Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, and East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. Black Creek is also under contract to the County to provide the security system at the Rock Mountain Detention Facility currently undergoing renovation.

The contract with Black Creek will allow the San Diego Sheriff’s Office to take advantage of the latest technological advancements in correctional security control as well as enhance safety and accountability in its daily interactions between staff, inmates and the public. Additional benefits include reduced installation and maintenance costs and improved service response times. The upgraded systems will also provide documentary evidence for use in criminal prosecutions and in the defense of liability claims against the County.
